Attitude, attitude, attitude.... Perhaps the toughest quasi-emotion to disguise, yet one of the most powerful quasi-emotion to exude. Have you ever had someone comment on your attitude? Whether it was a parent, sibling, family member, or friend... isn't there an immediate feeling you get when someone actually comments on how you "come off?" Of course! Everyone has and everyone does! It is linked to our personality and our identity, which makes it such a visible part of our being; which is also why it is important to control.
A simple definition of attitude is, "a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state"- Merriam Webster. Attitude is what we project in response to what we feel and think. Regardless if it is pleasant or unpleasant stimuli, we each have a unique reaction to them that shows through our actions, words, and most infamously, our faces. So what is the biggie about attitude? Because attitude has a strong, negative connotation, as it pertains to a person's demeanor, it is an important self-management factor. Think back to when someone commented on your attitude. Was that person praising you for your awesome, contagious, pleasant attitude or for your negative, uninviting, or salty attitude? Typically it's the latter if you hear someone use the word "attitude." People tend to use other words such as: demeanor, aura, personality, or spirit to actually describe what is in fact your attitude- your visual emotion/feeling. However, attitude is what is so commonly related to facial expressions, tone, words and actions. This is why understanding the ABCs of attitude can help you not only maintain a "professional" attitude but also help you be aware of how you react to different stimuli. First, a professional attitude is the perceived positive attitude that you MUST maintain in the workforce. You may have heard that perception is everything, the same goes for your attitude. Attitude is what others judge you on. Not much is worse than being "that one" with the bad attitude, or with "the"attitude because almost all the time, it is negative. So how can you make sure you are on track with your attitude? ABCs A- Awareness of what makes you go tick, then tick, then boom
B- Balance your emotions
C- Control your approach
*Remember, attitude speaks to you. Be sure to SHOW others what YOU think of you!*
